- The means of operating a HEIDENHAIN control are dependent on the hardware being used.
- The soft keys on the display unit are omitted on a touchscreen.
- Only the keys of the machine operating panel can be available.
- You can also connect a mouse and a keyboard.

Keys on the screen
In addition to the keys displayed on the screen, the control provides many context-specific functions as soft keys (areas marked in red).

Operating modes
The control always displays the selected modes of operation in the header:
- Left side: machine operating mode
- Right side: programming operating mode
The operating mode displayed on the screen is indicated in the header as a larger foreground field.
The control indicates possible functions in a soft key row in the footer. You select these functions on the machine with the soft key selection keys below.
Narrow bars directly above the soft key row show the number of soft key rows.
Navigate between the soft-key rows with the keys for switching the soft-key rows. The narrow bar of the currently displayed soft-key row is shown in blue.
Active machine operating mode
1 | Machine operating mode in the foreground, and if applicable: dialog, error message |
2 | Programming operating mode in the background |
3 | Soft keys for machine tool builder functions |
4 | Soft keys |
5 | Machine state and position display |
6 | NC program, position display if applicable |
Active programming operating mode

Screen layout
You have various screen layout options, depending on the operating mode selected.
To select the screen layout, proceed as follows: | ||
| ||
|
For further details on the contents of the various screen layouts and their practical application, see the following interaction: Selecting the screen layout.
General status display
The general status display in the lower part of the screen informs you of the current state of the machine.
- It is displayed automatically in the following operating modes:
- Program run, single block
- Program run, full sequence
- Positioning w/ Manual Data Input
If the GRAPHICS screen layout is selected, the status display is not shown.
In the Manual operation and Electronic handwheel operating modes, the status display appears in the large window.
Information in the status display
Symbol | Meaning |
---|---|
ACTL | Position display: Actual, nominal or distance-to-go coordinates |
Machine axes The sequence and number of displayed axes is determined by the machine tool builder. Refer to your machine manual for more information | |
Number of the active preset from the preset table If the preset was set manually, the control displays the text MAN behind the symbol. | |
F S M | Spindle speed S, feed rate F and active M functions The displayed feed rate in inches corresponds to one tenth of the effective value. |
Axis is clamped | |
Axis can be moved with the handwheel | |
Axes are moving under a basic rotation | |
No NC program selected, NC program reselected, NC program aborted via internal stop or NC program terminated In this state, the control has no modally effective program information, so that all actions are possible, e.g. cursor movements or modification of Q parameters. | |
NC Program started, execution runs For safety reasons, the control permits no actions in this state. | |
NC program stopped, e.g. in Program run, full sequence operating mode after pressing the NC stop key For safety reasons, the control permits no actions in this state. | |
NC program interrupted, e.g. in Positioning w/ Manual Data Input operating mode, following the error-free execution of an NC block In this state, the control permits various actions, e.g. cursor movements or the modification of Q parameters. With these actions, however, the control may lose the modally effective program information. This might result in undesired tool positions! | |
NC program aborted or terminated |
This table is not exhaustive, it contains only the most important symbols for 3-axis machining.
For more information on the missing symbols, please refer to the User's Manual of the control.
The User's Manual is accessible via the links in the Additional information and directly on the control and at the programming station, where you can open TNCguide, the context-sensitive online help.
